“People have the idea that when they reach a certain age, it automatically means they have to move into a care facility. But that’s not the case… What I tell people is age is a number and life is more than a number.”

This week’s guest is another fantastic TEDxStanleyPark speaker, Dr. Roger Wong. Roger is a geriatrics physician, a clinical professor and the Executive Associate Dean of Education at the University of British Columbia.
Although Dr. Roger’s TEDx talk was informative, it was the embedded emotionality that made me and the rest of the audience truly embrace his words. He spoke on the benefits of keeping our elderly loved ones safe in their homes, their comfort zones, for longer. There are definitely times where a family must come together to decide what is the best course of action for an aging loved one, however, one of Dr. Roger’s points is that this meeting does not have to occur at one certain age.
We are all aging and how we deal with our elderly matters. They deserve to be given the best possible route for their ongoing success. Whether that is moving into a care facility or staying at home and optimizing the layout’s safety depends entirely on the situation. Dr. Roger Wong can help clarify this emotional and important topic. Check out the episode for tips on how to handle this situation and for those of you who missed Roger’s TedxStanleyPark talk, you can see it here.
