“Don’t wait for that person who said something that hurt you to ever acknowledge that they did and ever say they're sorry. You forgive for yourself. You have to do it for yourself, nobody else.”
- Gayle Kirschenbaum

I am excited to bring you this week’s episode with the fantastic filmmaker Gayle Kirschenbaum. Although she has made different films, Gayle is perhaps best known for her documentary, Look At Us Now, Mother, where she highlights the complex and difficult relationship between herself and her mother, a topic she expands upon in her TEDx talk.

Growing up with a narcissistic mother was a very difficult path Gayle had to overcome. She had to get through years of emotional abuse before she was able to distance herself from her family, only to then truly find it in her heart to forgive them.
Throughout the episode, Gayle discusses forgiveness. Whether it be the importance of implementing it or tips on how to activate it even in the most seemingly impossible situations, Gayle has some answers. For anyone with a toxic loved one in their lives, this episode is a must watch. Even if you do not have a that kind of relationship in your social circle, learning how to be more forgiving is never a bad idea.

In this interview, Gayle Kirschenbaum discusses:
  • How she came to create her two movies My Nose and Look At Us Now, Mother. [1:23]
  • How her past trauma came back and made her physically ill. [4:50]
  • Her movement “No More Drama With Mama”. [7:50]
  • What her mother thought of all this attention she was bringing to their rocky relationship. [8:40]
  • What her relationship with her mother is like presently. [12:11]
  • How she felt about her mother while she was growing up. [13:50]
  • How she learnt to forgive her mother’s toxic behaviour. [17:44}
  • How she forgave her brothers and what their relationship is like now. [21:56]
  • If her mother is still critical. [25:05]
  • How Louise Hay influenced her forgiveness progress. [28:40]
  • The reason there is no point to blame. [32:00]
  • How to overcome the difficulties of forgiveness. [37:30]
