How To Avoid Regrets and Overcome Fear

You may be wondering why I speak so often about fear, as I have done so quite a few times now. The thing is, fear is such a big part of our thought process that sometimes we overlook it all together. We may be so accustomed to our fears that we let it run our entire lives. This happens to so many of us and then we are left looking back with regret.

Why should you go for your dreams and conquer fear, no matter how hard? Because if you don’t you will regret it and regret is so much worse than failure - trust me.  Don’t live your life wishfully thinking, act and act now.  In the end, you don’t want to look back and say to yourself  ‘if only’. Live your life with the goal of having no regrets.

So, with all that in mind, you may be asking yourself how to overcome fear and make your purpose overcome your fears. Well, I went back and collected a few points I covered in a much larger conversation on my podcast Succeed Against The Odds on this very topic. If you want to hear more on this issue, I highly recommend checking it out. As for now, here is my list of ways to make your WHY bigger than your FEARS.

  • Shift your focus on all the positive outcomes. Think about all the things that can go right and work your way to implement the steps accordingly.
  • Start with small steps, the more you take the more they will lead into  bigger steps.  You will find your risk tolerance level increases as you breakthrough. You will automatically find it easier to take bigger ones.
  • Show up! Commit and make time in your schedule for the steps necessary, even if it is 5 minutes a day.
  • Acknowledge your successes, no matter how small.
  • Don’t wait for things to be perfect to start, just start. You don’t have to have all the answers right away. You can course correct as you go.
  • Learn from those who inspire you.
  • Surround yourself with supportive like-minded people, read books that help you get closer to your goals, listen to uplifting music
  • Create for yourself a positive environment that helps you stay focused.
  • When you fall, and chances are you will, just get up again. It’s what will make you stronger and give you the ability to move forward.
  • Don’t dwell on the things that have gone wrong in the past. Look at them as lessons and experience and move on.
  • Get a mentor or a coach to guide you.  I’ve personally found that doing this one thing has been one of the best investments I’ve ever made in helping me accomplish much more than I ever imagined possible.
  • Embrace the journey and cherish the process.
Not using your full potential, not living in full, is really cheating yourself from all that is waiting for you. It’s denying yourself what is already yours. Remember, courage only exists in the presence of fear. If you take anything from this, take the idea that what you should REALLY be afraid of is not failure but rather regret.

It can be tough to let go of self-condemnation, especially when all the resistive forces are chasing you. In that case, you feel bad, you feel stuck and you take yourself as a fraudulent. The negative feelings present in the mind make it difficult for you to realize your self-worth. Remember one thing- nobody can change the past. Thus, it will be better if you focus on the present and try to make the most of it. By focusing on the gratitude, spotting the negative thoughts, forgiving yourself, and accepting that human beings are error-prone creatures, you can develop a positive mindset, avoid feeling apologetic, and overcome your fear.
